I forced it to retstart and held down Apple-S to do an fsck -yf and it did not see my HD.I put the startup OSX DVD in and restarted with the C to run Disk Utility and there were no drives present for it to scan.just the DVD! I thought I had lost everything, and then I got the idea to force it to shut down, and UNPLUG it from the wall, like I do with my electronic drums at church when they need some good purging/resetting.and TA DAH! It worked.everything came back, and I put it into Safe Boot and turned on my iomega USB backup with 265GB of free space and started backing up all the files I can before I archive install the OS! It will only be 10.4.3, so I hope it will software update back up to 10.4.11 and be a clean running system. I was in Safe Boot and in my preparation to do an Archive OSX install, I was using the Apple/backspace keyboard shortcut to throw items in trash after changing permissions so admin could read/write, and was changing the permissions on user account folders, and when I got to my wife's managed user Library folder and was done copying it to my admin desktop so I could change it, it said there was a file error, so I deleted it the same way I'd done all these other folders successfully, and then suddenly everything on the desktop disappeared.
